NIGERIAN ARMY PROBES SEXUAL ABUSE ALLEGATION AGAINST SERVING OFFICER, CAPTAIN ETIM ESSIEN
The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.
The Army, in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, said it was aware of reports circulating online concerning the allegations and had initiated steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter.
According to the statement, the Army considers allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, extremely serious and would ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated.
It, however, cautioned against reaching conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of the officer while investigations are ongoing, stressing that due process, fairness and the rights and dignity of all parties must be protected.

The Army also confirmed that relevant civil authorities are investigating the matter and pledged full cooperation to ensure a transparent investigation in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
It warned that any personnel eventually found to have violated the law or established military regulations would face appropriate action.
The Army further appealed to members of the public to refrain from speculation and the circulation of unverified information that could prejudice the investigation or compromise the privacy and wellbeing of those involved, particularly any minor.

The statement, dated September 11, 2026, added that further information would be provided when appropriate, subject to the law and the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
