The Commissioner for Secondary, Technical and Vocational Education, Taraba State, Dr. Augustina Godwin, has paid an inspection visit to the Government Technical Training School (GTTS), Jalingo, to assess the technical and vocational equipment deployed to the institution and ascertain their level of utilisation.
The visit formed part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education in the state and ensure that government investments in skills development directly benefit students and teachers.
During the visit, Dr. Augustina inspected the equipment provided to the school and interacted with members of staff and students to gain firsthand knowledge of the opportunities and challenges confronting technical and vocational education at the institution.
The Commissioner also visited some classrooms, where she observed students receiving lessons under challenging conditions, including some students sitting on bare floors as a result of overcrowding.
The situation, according to the Commissioner, underscores the growing demand for education following the implementation of the free education policy of the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas.
Dr. Augustina expressed concern over the condition and assured the school community that the Ministry would take immediate steps to address the identified challenges, particularly the issue of inadequate classroom furniture and overcrowding.
She said that the Agbu Kefas’s administration remained committed to creating a conducive learning environment where students could acquire the knowledge and practical skills required to become productive citizens and contribute meaningfully to the development of Taraba State.
The Commissioner commended the teachers and students for their commitment and encouraged them to make maximum use of the available facilities and equipment.
Dr. Augustina was received by the Principal of GTTS Jalingo, Mr. Abdulrazaq Haliru, alongside members of the school’s management team.
Responding to the Commissioner’s visit, the Principal assured her of the school management’s commitment to ensuring that the equipment provided by government was put to productive use.
He disclosed that the school was determined to commence production of items through its technical workshops, with the aim of selling the products to generate revenue while also providing students with practical entrepreneurial experience.
According to him, the initiative would enable students to move beyond classroom learning to actual production, thereby equipping them with skills that could support self-reliance and entrepreneurship after graduation.
He appreciated the Commissioner for taking time to visit the school and inspect the facilities firsthand, describing the visit as an encouragement to the management, teachers and students.
The visit reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening technical and vocational education as a key component of the state government’s human capital development agenda.
