TSU Holds 11th Inaugural Lecture, Highlights Mangroves as Shield for Nigeria’s Shores

Taraba State University, Jalingo, has held its 11th Inaugural Lecture, marking another milestone in the institution’s academic and intellectual development.

The lecture, titled “The Science of Wood: Mangroves as a Paradigm Shift; The Shield of Nigeria’s Shores,” was delivered by Professor Emuobonuvie Amy Emerhi.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sunday Paul Bako, was represented at the occasion by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Reuben Jonathan, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Mahmood H. Umar.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Registrar, Dr. Justina Akawu; former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Onesimus Bulus Shiaki; members of the University Senate; distinguished scholars; invited guests and students.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Professor Mahmood H. Umar welcomed guests to the University and described the inaugural lecture as an important academic occasion.

He said inaugural lectures provide professors with an opportunity to bring together years of teaching, research and professional experience and share their knowledge with the University community and the wider society.

Professor Umar, on behalf of the University Management, congratulated Professor Emerhi for delivering the institution’s 11th Inaugural Lecture.

In her presentation, Professor Emerhi examined the importance of mangrove forests in protecting the environment and highlighted their role in safeguarding Nigeria’s coastal areas.

She called for greater participation by government, students, parents, community leaders and other stakeholders in forest conservation and environmental protection.

Professor Emerhi also encouraged stakeholders to embrace tree planting and other environmental sustainability initiatives, particularly as measures to protect the soil and reduce erosion.

According to her presentation, sustainable management of forest resources is essential to environmental protection, ecosystem preservation and the long-term sustainability of natural resources.

At the close of the ceremony, Professor Mahmood H. Umar, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, presented a plaque to Professor Emerhi in recognition of her scholarly contribution and the successful delivery of the University’s 11th Inaugural Lecture.

The event further underscored Taraba State University’s commitment to academic scholarship, research, knowledge sharing and environmental sustainability.
