Seven Months Unpaid Salaries: Taraba Quarry Workers Threaten Peaceful Protest
Casual workers of the Taraba State Quarry Management have threatened to embark on a peaceful protest over alleged non-payment of seven months’ salaries, calling on the Taraba State Government and relevant authorities to intervene.
The workers, in a statement announcing the planned action, said the protest is expected to commence on Monday following what they described as the failure of the management to resolve their salary grievances despite being given three weeks’ notice.
According to the workers, the outstanding payments comprise five months’ salaries allegedly owed from 2022/2023 and another two months from 2025/2026.
They said the prolonged delay in receiving their salaries had imposed serious financial hardship on them and their families, affecting their ability to provide food, pay school fees and meet other basic household responsibilities.
“We are all casual staff from the Taraba State Government, and we have families and responsibilities to cater for,” the workers said.
They maintained that their planned demonstration would be peaceful and lawful, stressing that their demand was limited to the payment of salaries they said were legitimately owed to them.
The workers appealed directly to the Taraba State Government, the management of the quarry and other relevant authorities to intervene before the planned protest.
“We want our salaries. We want to feed our families. We want our children to remain in school. We want justice,” the statement added.
They also pledged to maintain order throughout the planned action while insisting that authorities should urgently address their grievances.
As of the time of this report, Taraba News had not independently established the circumstances surrounding the alleged salary arrears or received an official response from the Taraba State Quarry Management or the state government on the workers’ claims.
