Gov. Kefas Sets Up Task Force to Recover Government Lands in Taraba

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the constitution of a special task force for the recovery and confiscation of government lands allegedly taken over by individuals and organisations across the state.

The decision was announced in a press release dated August 24, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps.

According to the statement, the task force is mandated to identify and recover government-owned lands that have been taken over by private individuals or organisations within Taraba State.

The committee will be chaired by Nelson Nathaniel Banka, while Atiku Muhammed of the Taraba Geographic Information Service (TAGIS) will serve as a member.

Other members include Daniel Gelle Kwanchi, Esq.; Muhammad Lawal Buba, Special Adviser from TAGIS; Awudu Ishaya Gani; Umaru Adamu Leme; and Jacob Ardennura Ahmadu.

Representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the State, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Justice are also included in the task force.

Abel Bako Lau will serve as secretary of the committee.

The government said Governor Kefas will formally inaugurate the task force on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the EXCO Chambers.

The establishment of the task force signals a fresh move by the Kefas administration to address issues surrounding government property, land encroachment and alleged land grabbing in the state.

The move also comes amid broader efforts by the state government to tackle land-related disputes, illegal mining and environmental violations. In July, the government identified land grabbing among issues requiring stronger security and enforcement measures, while recent executive actions have also targeted environmental degradation and unauthorised exploitation of natural resources.

The task force is expected to begin its assignment following Wednesday’s inauguration, with attention likely to focus on identifying affected government lands and determining appropriate steps for their recovery.
