JALINGO — Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has called on Christian leaders to continue using their influence to promote peace, unity, good values and development across the state.
The governor made the call while speaking at the three-day Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.
The conference, which brought together Christian ministers from across the 16 Local Government Areas and two Development Areas of the state, is themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World.”
Kefas said the Church has an important role to play in shaping society, particularly through its teachings, prayers, humanitarian activities and moral guidance.
He stressed the need for continued cooperation between government and religious institutions in addressing challenges affecting the people and building a peaceful and prosperous Taraba State.
The governor’s position is consistent with his earlier call for stronger collaboration between the Church and government to address social challenges and promote development. He has also described the Church as a critical partner in the administration’s efforts to build a peaceful and prosperous state.
Kefas urged Christian leaders to remain committed to their spiritual and social responsibilities and to continue providing moral leadership in their communities.
He also encouraged ministers to use their platforms to promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence and unity among the people, regardless of ethnic, political or religious differences.
The governor’s message came as about 850 ministers gathered in Jalingo for the conference, which is designed to provide an opportunity for Christian leaders to reflect on the relationship between the Church and the State and their responsibilities towards society.
Chairman of the Central Working Committee of the conference, Bishop Dr. Innocent Solomon, said the gathering was a strategic opportunity for Christian leaders to come together for fellowship, reflection, dialogue and capacity building.
He said the conference would also focus on strengthening relationships within the Christian community and encouraging leaders to contribute meaningfully to the development of Taraba State.
The event is attracting prominent Christian leaders and public figures, with discussions expected to centre on faith, leadership, peace, unity, governance and the future of Taraba State.
The conference therefore provides a platform for the Church and government to examine areas of cooperation while maintaining their respective responsibilities in society.
For Taraba, the gathering is coming at a time when religious leaders are increasingly being called upon to contribute to peace-building, moral development and constructive engagement on issues affecting the people.
