JALINGO — The Peace Corps of Nigeria, Taraba State Command, has joined the rest of the world in commemorating the United Nations International Day of Peace with children at the Global Methodist Church of Nigeria (GMCN) Orphanage Home, Mile Six, Jalingo.
The celebration, held at the GMCN Secretariat, Mile Six, featured messages of peace, prayers and a donation of essential items to the orphanage.
Representing the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, the North-East Zonal Commander, Patriot James Daniel, said peace remained non-negotiable for the development and stability of the country.
Speaking on the theme, “Invest in Peace for Everyone, Everywhere and Everyday,” Patriot Daniel said the message was particularly relevant at a time when communities across Nigeria continue to face various security challenges.
He urged Nigerians to embrace peace, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that sustainable development could only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and security.
The Presiding Bishop of the Global Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. John Pena Auta, commended the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Taraba State Command, for choosing to mark the occasion with the children.
Bishop Auta described the gesture as an expression of love and a practical demonstration of the ministry of peace, urging Nigerians to see love, unity and peaceful coexistence as a shared responsibility.
Addressing the children, the Bishop encouraged them to remain hopeful and positive, assuring them that their present circumstances or background would not determine their future.
Also speaking, the Taraba State Commandant of the Peace Corps, Patriot Mantis Daniel Manti, encouraged the children to keep hope alive and trust in God’s care and faithfulness.
As part of the celebration, the Peace Corps presented five mattresses to the orphanage and pledged additional support, including the provision of pairs of uniforms for the children.
The Taraba State Command also announced plans to create five opportunities for interested children from the orphanage to join the Peace Corps when they attain the required eligibility.
The event ended with special prayers for peace offered by the children and Bishop Auta, followed by the benediction.
