The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Taraba State Branch, has taken its pharmacy career awareness campaign to Government Day Secondary School, Sabon Gari, Jalingo, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Pharmacists Day.
The outreach, held ahead of the September 25 celebration, was aimed at introducing students to the pharmacy profession, its role in healthcare delivery and the various career opportunities available to pharmacy graduates.
Receiving the PSN delegation, the school’s Principal, Dr. Robert S. Moses, commended the initiative and stressed the importance of collaboration between professional bodies and educational institutions in helping students make informed career choices.
Addressing the students, the Chairman of PSN, Taraba State Branch, Pharm. Nyajon Denis Ayetop, urged them to pay close attention to the presentations and take advantage of the opportunity to learn directly from practising pharmacists.
He encouraged the students to ask questions and use the information provided during the career talk to guide their future academic and career decisions.
The immediate past Chairman of the branch, Pharm. Samaila Ikanire Boyi, explained the significance of World Pharmacists Day and gave the students an overview of the pharmacy profession.
Boyi highlighted the role of pharmacists in ensuring the safe, effective and rational use of medicines, while encouraging the students to look beyond the perception of pharmacists as professionals who merely dispense medicines.
Speaking on career opportunities, Pharm. David Ocheje of the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, said pharmacy graduates could pursue careers in hospital and clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, academia and research.
He urged the students to understand that a pharmacy degree could provide opportunities across different sectors of healthcare, education, research and pharmaceutical services.
Also speaking, Pharm. (Mrs) Zuleiha Abubakar Girei, FPCPharm, highlighted opportunities for women in the profession and encouraged female students to consider pharmacy as a career option.
Girei said women could build successful careers and occupy important positions in various areas of the pharmacy profession.
Another speaker, Pharm. Hassan Istifanus Utan, FPSN, provided the students with guidance on academic preparation for admission into pharmacy programmes.
Utan advised the students to pay attention to relevant science subjects in their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) preparations.
He also urged them to cultivate discipline, hard work and determination, stressing the need for early preparation and clear academic goals.
The outreach also featured the presentation of medicines to the school for use in its first-aid box.
The donation, according to the society, was part of its efforts to support the health and wellbeing of students while strengthening its relationship with educational institutions.
The students also participated in a quiz competition based on the presentations and healthcare-related issues, with outstanding participants receiving gifts.
The PSN Taraba State Branch said the outreach formed part of its activities to commemorate World Pharmacists Day 2026 and promote awareness of the pharmacy profession among young people.
The society also reaffirmed its commitment to continued engagement with schools and other stakeholders in Taraba State on career development, health awareness and the advancement of the pharmacy profession.
