Residents of Sunkani, headquarters of Ardo Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State, have appealed to their political representatives to urgently intervene in the community’s prolonged electricity and water challenges.
The appeal was contained in an open letter signed by Edam Rubilakayan Benos, a concerned citizen of Sunkani, and addressed to Hon. Happy Shoruba, Member representing Ardo Kola State Constituency; Hon. A. M. Lauya, Member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Ardo Kola, Lau and Karim Lamido Federal Constituency; and Senator Shuaibu Lau, representing Taraba North Senatorial District.
According to the letter, residents in parts of Sunkani have lived without reliable electricity for about 11 years, despite the presence of electricity poles in some areas.
The writer said the community still requires the installation of necessary wires and approximately five transformers to make the existing electricity infrastructure functional.
The appeal urged the representatives to use their offices and available channels to facilitate the completion of the electricity infrastructure and restore reliable power supply to the local government headquarters.
The letter also raised concerns over inadequate access to potable water in parts of Sunkani.
It stated that some residents are forced to travel considerable distances in search of water for drinking, cooking and other household needs.
The community further appealed for the provision or rehabilitation of functional boreholes and other sustainable water facilities, particularly in areas experiencing the greatest hardship.
The signatory stressed that the appeal was not politically motivated, but was intended to draw attention to basic infrastructure challenges affecting residents irrespective of political affiliation, religion, tribe or social status.
“Our request is not about politics. It is about development,” the letter stated.
The residents expressed hope that the representatives would consider the appeal and take concrete steps towards addressing the electricity and water challenges.
They said their immediate priorities were water, electricity and improved living conditions for the people of Sunkani.
