The Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA) has participated in a zonal stakeholders’ workshop on the review of the National Disaster Management Framework (NDMF) and the National Disaster Response Plan (NDRP).
The workshop, organised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the World Bank Group, was held at City Star Hotel, Old GRA, Maiduguri, Borno State.
The engagement brought together disaster management stakeholders from Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states to review existing mechanisms for disaster preparedness, response and recovery across the country.
Representing the Executive Secretary of TSEMA, Dr. Echuseh Audu, at the workshop was the Director of Technical Services, Mr. Bakari Kwanchi.
Kwanchi commended NEMA and the World Bank Group for organising the zonal stakeholders’ engagement, describing the workshop as an important platform for strengthening coordination among disaster management institutions at the national and sub-national levels.
He said effective disaster management requires strong collaboration, clear response mechanisms and continuous review of existing frameworks to reflect emerging risks and challenges.
The TSEMA representative also highlighted the importance of strengthening preparedness and response capacity in the North-East, particularly given the region’s exposure to various emergencies and humanitarian challenges.
He expressed appreciation to the Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for what he described as his consistent support and leadership in strengthening disaster management and emergency response efforts in the state.
According to him, the governor’s support has contributed to improving TSEMA’s capacity to respond more effectively to emergencies and support affected communities across Taraba.
The workshop provided participants with an opportunity to review the existing NDMF and NDRP, share experiences from their respective states and identify areas requiring improvement.
Participants also discussed recommendations aimed at improving coordination, preparedness, response and recovery mechanisms, with the broader objective of building a more resilient disaster management system in Nigeria.
The outcomes of the zonal consultations are expected to contribute to the ongoing review of the national disaster management framework and response plan.
